Don't Stop Trying to Understand the Word

Focus:

Scriptures:

Acts 6:7

1 Peter 2:1-2

2 Peter 3:18 Hebrews 5:11-14

Points:

  1. When we disagree with the Word of God, we are being hostile towards the Word.

  2. Put the world's wisdom under subjection when it exalts itself above the knowledge of God.

  3. When we get saved, the Word of God should increase in us.

  4. We should never give up on trying to understand the Word of God.

  5. If you run with wise men, you will be wise.  If you run with fools, you will be a fool.

  6. Denying ourselves is a part of coming to Christ and being in Christ.

Summary:

We are to be good soldiers for God following His commandments.  To do this, we must die to ourselves.  Coming to Christ includes denying ourselves.  When we get saved, the Word of God should increase in us.  Newborns have an appetite.  They come into this world with this.  New Christians have this same excitement about the Word.  God wants us to continue to grow in the Word.  We should grow from desiring the milk of the Word to the meat of the Word.  The meat of the Word will offend our human nature, but we can't just stick to elementary teachings.  The offenses that come from Jesus will help us grow.  When we grow in Christ, self is decreasing. We're stripping it of its power and influence.  We must not stop trying to understand the Word just because we may run into something that is hard to digest or understand.  If we stop trying to understand God's Word, we will become dull of hearing and revert back to our human nature.
