God's Church: the School of the Scriptures
Focus: Believe the scriptures first and then get an understanding
Scriptures:
| Luke 24:1-30 |
Points:
Why are some looking for Jesus among the dead?
Our foundation is Jesus, the way, the truth, and the life.
We must be quick to believe the scriptures.
The church should be the place to learn scriptures.
Summary:
Many people want to understand the scriptures before they believe them. God wants us to believe His Word and then He will give us an understanding through the Holy Spirit. The scriptures are our foundation. However, many Christians are quick to believe error and slow to believe scriptures. We should not look for Jesus in dead places. Luke 24 tells us of women who went to His tomb looking for Him. Angels appeared to them asking, "Why seek ye the living among the dead?" Many are looking for Jesus in dead churches whose foundation is man and their traditions rather than the scriptures. The angles then reminded them of what Jesus said about His death and resurrection. The women received and went and preached the resurrection to the apostles. However, the apostles did not believe their report. Peter went to the sepulcher to see for himself. Even leaders can mess up some times. Jesus told us blessed are those who believe and have not seen. After these events, Jesus appeared to two of his followers as they went to the town of Emmaus. They did not recognize Jesus as He talked with them. Jesus asked them what they were talking about and why they were sad. They recounted recent events concerning Jesus and how they had believed that He would redeem Israel. At this point, they had doubts. Jesus corrected them calling them fools and slow of heart to believe. Jesus then expounded unto them scriptures concerning Himself. He later broke bread with them fulfilling His own commandment about communion. There eyes were then opened and they believed. We must follow Jesus' example emphasizing and expounding on the scriptures. The church should be a place where we are taught the Word of God. Then as disciples, we must go out and teach others who want to learn of Jesus Christ.
